Mrs Usha Srirangam
Media has widely reported the allegation of police that a woman is very close to the Acharya and the police need to probe her involvement in the murder of Sankara Raman
Usha, the police claim is a ‘deserted woman’ from Srirangam in Trichinapally district. The prosecution also claimed that the Acharya was in the habit of talking to her in the early hours and the call used to last 900 pulse units. The seer had also arranged, according to the police, free quarters for Usha in Srirangam and substantial amount of money has been transferred to her periodically through bank.
The prosecution linking the seer to this ‘deserted woman’ in view of its claim of monthly payments, free quarters and telephone calls is a figment of imagination.
Here are the facts.
1. Smt Usha is a cancer patient and her husband left home some time ago.
2. Smt Usha is currently living with her aged mother, in Srirangam, and continues
the tradition of being followers of the mutt.
3. The family is in a state of penury and desperately needs financial support
for their day to day needs.
4. Keeping in mind her helpless state the mutt management permitted the mutt
to respond to her request for financial help.
5. Smt. Usha of Srirangam indeed is receiving a solatium of Rs 3000 per month
from the Mutt (not substantial money as claimed). The Mutt has nothing to
do with her accommodation.
6. There are several people who are receiving payments every month from the
sri matham as dharmam. From the main accounts of the Mutt there are 33 benefitiaries
receiving this solatium ranging from Rs 15, to Rs 5,000 per month. Click

7. Even in this list there are seven other ladies
8. Smt. Usha is not the only cancer patient who has received such help. The
Sri Matha Trust run under the auspices of the Mutt provides free accommodation,
and food not only to the patients at the Cancer hospital Adyar, but also
to their close relatives.
Can such an act of charity to people who are destitutes and in need of help,
be reduced to calumny?
