You ask and Cho answers – selected Q&A from Thuglak issue dated 5-1-2005
1. The Supreme Court refused bail for Jayendrar. Did you expect it?
Supreme Court has not refused bail. All they have said is that they can decide only after hearing what the TN Government has to say. Therefore they have issued a notice to the TN Government . Whether bail will be granted or not will be known only after the hearing. I believe that the Shankaracharya has a chance to get bail in the supreme court. I unable to say anything more firmly beyond this.
2. In Dharmapuri three college girls were burnt to death. Apparently a prosecution
lawyer is yet to be appointed. What does this indicate?
Every one is equal in the eyes of the law. But every one who is dead is not Sankara Raman. Nor is every accused a Shankaracharya.
3. The TN Government had made offered a reward of Rs 1.0 lakh for any one
who gave information about Appu, leading to his arrest. Now who will get
the money?
What is wrong with you? Can’t you keep quiet? If you see the respect TN police gives to Appu, they might even say to him ‘ Only you helped us find you & arrest you. So please accept this money’! Why do you want to get into trouble?
4. Do you believe that if DMK Chief Karunanidhi was the CM, such harsh and scandalous accusations would have been made against the Shankaracharya?
Karunanidhi has talked about it in one of his interviews. He has not said that ‘I would not have done this’. However that is the impression one gets when you read the interview. Even if he has not stated openly what he had in his mind, I do believe that such extra-ordinary harshness would not have been applied.
5. Are you not at all angry with Jayalalithaa regarding the Jayendrar case?
You have not written anything to this effect in Thuglak even once. Why?
It is wrong to jump about in celebration or get emotional and angry – without knowing what exactly has happened. There are several things to be understood & several questions to be answered. I am not prepared to forget this truth.
6. You have been advocating that the TN police needs more independence & encouragement. How is it that you are changing your stance on this, in the Jayendrar case?
Even today my views about the powers of the police have not changed. If I
point out how the police is misusing their powers, it does not mean that
I say they should not have any powers.
