COURT OF TRUTH AND “FALSPIRATION!”
Shriman Jayendra Sarasawati Swamigal was fond of a particular song of the Great Tamil Saint Thaayumanavar aTikaL. Some years ago in one of the Dipavali Malar of the magazine Kalki, he recalled this pATal, and remarked that this pATal is Advaita in a nutshell.Thayumana ATikaL took samAdhi and departed for Siva Lokam on Thait tingaL vicAka nazatram on the 28th Day of Thai Madam in 1662. The 343rd Anniversary of his Samadhi is coming on Thursday, February 3, 2005 on the Day of Thai VicAka nazatram.
I would like to post the first half of the pATal, which appealed to Swamigal. The First half gives two specific examples and the dilemma they create for ATikaL. The second half of the pATal gives an expanded list of things and concepts, where Thaayumanavar sees God.
It is pATal 6 under the Heading of “karuNAkarak kaTavul: God of Love!” Since I do not have the software for Tamil, I am only giving the translation. The original Tamil pATal should be added for completeness and greater appreciation.
pATal 6: First Half (the part Periaval loved)
“LORD of LOVE, I am beset with dilemma, if it is proper for me to worship You formally with flowers or with folded hands.
I dare not perform a Formal Worship Service for You. When I prepare my mind to perform a pUjA and think that an appropriate form of prayer is worshipping You with flowers, and I go to gather the flowers, I notice that You really (niYE) are sitting inside that Flower! How dare I to pluck That Flower! No, I can’t do that!
I abandon that and decide to pray with folded arms. With folded hands, when I bring the two palms together, lO, I feel ashamed! Now You are indeed sitting inside my Heart! I feel embarrassed to I pray to myself in this way with folded hands. Thus whenever I fold, be it my hands, be it my body, it is all half-hearted.
I am beset with a lingering dilemma about my way of praying! Given this lack of dedication, is it proper for me to even worship You formally, Oh God of Love, My Salvation?”
I think pATal 5 under the Caption of karuNAkarak kaTavuL is very apt on this occasion! I am giving a full translation.
pATal 5:You, LORD, have taught us the Real Truth through inspiring the truthful gurus, Whose tongues never let go Truth, and that all that Truth is Real. It is really true that You taught us so. There is no doubt about this.
[But,] I have [still] not leant anything about what is true! My mind is blank. [So look at me, look at what I do!] I catch hold of falsity and cling to it steadfast! It is You LORD, Who through falspiration of my mind, make me tell the falsest of the false, as if all that is true! Look LORD, if [in Your tiruviLaiyATal] You make me fabricate false statements like this], what can I do, trifle grass shoot that I am.
Look LORD, in how many forms You teach us the Truth!
• You teach as the guru, in the Form of the Majestic NIlakaNTA.
• You teach as Janaguru in the Form of ShrIman VishNu
• You teach in the Form of the Four Vedas recited by the Four-Faced Chaturmukha Brahma, and
• You teach as the guru and Pontiff in each and every religion. But the remarkable thing about You is that when we, Your devotees, cry out entreating You not to take away from us Your Guiding Hand and let us down, then You come within our hearts with Love as a Loving Teacher!
You are NOT the Disciplinarian Teacher, LORD! Your LOVE is Magnificent!], Oh, LORD karuNAkarak kaTavuLE, You are of the Form of LOVE [more than of the Form of NIlakaNTA, or of VishNu, of Brahma or of Religious Pontiffs.] You are the LORD of LOVE dancing with Joy in the Court of TRUTH that is Worthy to be considered!
MESSAGE:
• It is worthwhile for every witness including police officers to consider the Court of Truth before giving testimony. That is the message of Thayumanavar! That is what one is supposed to do when one takes an oath in a court of law while giving testimony. One should seriously consider and imagine the COURT OF TRUTH, when taking that oath!
• The expression ciRcapai, meaning the COURT of TRUTH is short and does not run 1700 pages! It has only THREE SYLLABLES: TWO FOR COURT, ONE SYLLABLE FOR TRUTH.
• ANOTHER MEANING OF THAT ONE SYLLABLE IS THAT TRUTH IS SHORT! IT may take 1700 pages to tell the falsest of falsity under FALSPIRATION! But truth generally takes one syllable, one word.
• TRUTH PREVAILS! FALSPIRATION BACKFIRES!
• REMEMBER:
karutariya ciRcapaiyil Ananta Nirdanam iTu
karuNAkarak kaTavuLE
enRu karututaRku ariyatu mey!BE AWARE OF Deepavali Malar, 2004. Someone, unlike Thayumanavar, dared to pluck the Real Flower on that Deepavali DAY.
(It is worthy to consider TRUTH as the COURT OF TRUTH, and the LORD of LOVE, Who is Dancing with Joy in the COURT OF TRUTH!)
