"An Unaccountable Delay"

http://sankaracharyaarticles.blogspot.com/

We're a bit surprised that the delay in delivering the chargesheet copies has not raised more eyebrows.

It was with great pomp and ceremony that SP Premkumar and ASP Shaktivel delivered the chargesheet (or at least a summary thereof) directly from the feet of the deity Varadaraja Perumal to Magistrate Uttamaraaj's office on January 21st. The Hindu has already published (presumably) the same document presented to the Magistrate that day, signed by Shaktivel, on their website.

Reports, corroborated by later official statements, said a special 150 page per minute copier had been purchased by the Tamil Nadu government to the tune of 20 lakhs from the public exchequer, for the express purpose of copying the 1873-page chargesheet in this case.

Whip out your calculators. A little arithmetic can tell us whether the Prosecution have had sufficient time to copy the chargesheet. If we count all the original accused (25 including subsequently pardoned approver Ravi Subramaniam), and multiply by 1873 pages, the Prosecution needs to copy a total of 46,825 pages. Even if the copier is a bit slow, and only goes at 100 pages per minute, the work of making copies for all the accused would take less than 469 minutes. That's less than 8 hours!

Conclusion: Given their resources, the Prosecution has had ample time to make the necessary copies.

However, a full month later, the Prosecution has failed to produce said copies. Magistrate Uttamaraaj's two summons ordering all the accused to appear together- on the 10th and the 24th of February - appear to have been without any purpose. Presumably, the Magistrate didn't orchestrate a 'mela' out of loneliness. He must have expected the Prosecution to produce the chargesheet copies on both occasions.

When the court's actions indicate such an expectation, the repeated delays in producing the chargesheet copies ought to be viewed as suspect.

What are they doing with this document? Re-editing on the fly? If so, what changes are being made - and why?

When we do finally see this document, it might be interesting to compare it to the version *somebody* conveniently leaked to the Hindu for the entire world to read!
