18 booked under Goonda’s Act in January

CHENNAI: Another person was detained under Goonda’s Act last week, taking the number of anti-social and criminal elements detained under the Act in January to 18.

According to the police, N Veera, a rowdy based in Tondayarpet, involved in extortion, and against whom several criminal cases are pending, was arrested and detained last Saturday.

Of the 18 detained this month, nine have been held for causing law and order problems, eight for criminal offences and one for immoral trafficking. Last year, the city police had weeded out 405 persons in a drive. This year, in January, the city police have continued to turn the heat on criminals with the ongoing detentions.

‘‘We have not relented and have continued to target the criminals. The trouble-makers are identified and then detained. This process has helped a great deal in combating crime in the city and will be continued,’’ City Police Commissioner R Nataraj said.

Many police officers recalled a similar police crackdown held by the city police two years ago that had resulted in the detention of a huge chunk of criminals in the city. They added that the crime rate in the city had shot up in the interim period between this raid and the present one when these goondas were released after the mandatory one-year detention.

‘‘There was an marked increase in crime in-between. But with the detention drive being activated, crime in the city has definitely come down, though only marginally,’’ said an officer.

Though the past offenders are the main targets to be booked under the Act, quite a few first-time offenders are proving to be a thorn in the flesh for the police.

Sources in the police department revealed that first-timers were behind a large part of the burglaries and robberies committed in the city. ‘‘Once these first-time offenders are secured there are chances of a sizeable decline in the crime rate,’’ said one police officer.
