Interview

“You know the state of swamis don’t you?!”

For the past several weeks, with the Government of Tamil Nadu’s HRCE suddenly taking action, the Veera Saiva Matam has been publicized all over the media. Ju.Vi. has also covered this story. Under the pretext that it’s ‘administration was improper’, the HRCE seized the Matam; this matter went to the High Court. After the court ordered that ‘Control should immediately be restored to the Mataadipathi’, Mataadipathi Neelakanta Swamigal returned to the Mutt overflowing with joy. Today, our interview with him

Q: What did the HRCE do after getting inside the Mutt?

“On the 1st of the month, 10 people forced their way into the Mutt under the leadership of Assistant Secretary of Swamimalai Temple Dhanapal, (who has been suspended in this regard). He said: ‘I’ve received orders to take charge of this Mutt. So, sign over the affairs of the Mutt to me and get out immediately.’

I refused, saying ‘In the absence of Mutt Secretary Handi and lawyers, I cannot do any such thing.’

Immediately – 'You know what the state of even major swamis is, don’t you? Keep quiet and you hand over that writing!' They compelled me and ended up taking over the Mutt.

Straight away, I refused to vacate. ‘I need to do the Maarkazhi Month pujas. So, I have to stay here until this coming 21st’ I said.

For this, they locked the gate of the Mutt and imprisoned me. They prevented me from meeting the bhakths. What happened to me should never happen to any Mataadipathi!"

Q: It is said that, after that, they forcibly removed you?

“That is indeed true! ‘Now that Markazhi pujas are over, vacate from here at once!’ they compelled me. I took a decision that it was better to leave than stay on like a jailbird and without anyone knowing, I went to stay at a bhakt’s house.”

Q: Furious devotees are saying that Mutt Secretary Handi’s death was caused by HRCE?

“Handi was someone who worked tirelessly for the Mutt. The HRCE’s outrageous actions are indeed the cause of his demise. We are grieving the loss of a good man”

Q: “The HRCE says the Mutt’s properties were being sold to private parties without government permission and that is why they took over?”

“Certain things took place before I took the responsibility of Mataadipathi. What can we do about that? The judgment of the lower court in that case only said that the then Mataadipathi should be removed. There was nothing in it granting the government the authority to take over.

After the judgment, they were quiet for years. When I was instated as Mataadipathi, they suddenly sprang into action. But the High Court ruling shows that The Lord is on our side – this is a victory in our sacred war against oppression.”
