Cops seek custody of junior pontiff

KANCHEEPURAM: The special investigation team probing the Kanchi Shankararaman
murder case has sought custody of junior pontiff Vijayendra Saraswati
for interrogation, sources said.
The petition seeking his custody would come up for argument before the Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate -I court on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the bail plea of Vijayendra Saraswati that came up for hearing before the Chengalpattu Sessions Court on Monday was posted for hearing to January 19, following a submission made by Public Prosecutor K Arumugam.
MANAGER HELD: In a related development, the Mutt’s former manager Sundaresa Iyer was sent to police custody for a day in connection with a case of tampering with the Mutt accounts.
Mutt accountant Kaladi Vishwanathan is the first accused in this case, and he has been charged with forging and tampering with the accounts as also tearing away some pages of the account books.
Magistrate G Uthamaraj (of the First Court) ordered police custody for Sundaresa Iyer ending Tuesday 5.20 p.m. though the prosecution sought seven days custody.
Sundaresa Iyer, charged under six Sections of the IPC, had ordered the accountant to destroy the ledgers as well as forge the documents, it was submitted in the court.
Investigating Officer A Muniyappan, an Inspector of Police attached to the Siva Kanchi police station, promised that Iyer would not be tortured during police custody.
Also, the Goondas Act was invoked on Monday against two more accused in the Shankararaman murder case - Chinna Kumar and Ananda Kumar. The total under this category now rises to six. All of them are already in prison under various Sections of the IPC, it may be noted here.
Four devotees of the Kanchi Shankara Mutt, Bombay Krishnan, Vaidyanathan, Subramani and Sambasivam, today deposed before the Uthiramerur Magistrate Shri Ramajeyam.
In yet another development, a Kancheepuram court has granted bail to four Mutt devotees, who were arrested on January 11 when they gathered outside the Mutt premises to protest against the arrest of the junior pontiff.
The police have assured that Sundaresa Iyer, former Mutt manager, will not
be tortured while in their custody.
