Kanchi seer protests mutt takeover
New Delhi
The Kanchi Shankaracharya has filed a petition for an injunction in the
Madras High Court to prevent the Tamil Nadu government from taking over the
property of the Kanchi Mutt.
The petition pointed out that most of the accounts represented the endowments
created by devotees to carry out religious functions in the Mutt.
It further contended that the amounts standing to the credit of the Mutt
belonged to a religious denomination and the state had no right to interfere
with the administration and management of property.
Earlier today, the Tamil Nadu government asked the Supreme Court for time
in the Radhakrishanan assault case against the acharya after the SC asked
the Tamil Nadu government to submit the injury report.
