Shiva shrine case adjourned
Tuesday February 8 2005 00:00 IST

MADURAI: The High Court Bench in Madurai on Monday adjourned indefinitely the hearing of a case relating to the shifting of the shrine of Lord Shiva in Thirukurunkudi Nambiraya Perumal temple in Tirunelveli district.

This temple, under the control of the Nanguneri taluk Jeer Mutt, is one of the 108 Vaishnavite shrines with a history of 1,300 years. The temple’s presiding deity is seen in three postures here.

The shrine of Lord Sivaperumal is situated near the Veetrirundha Perumal Sannanidhi, as Mahendragiri Nathar. The Jeer Mutt had planned to shift the shrine of Lord Shiva and moved the idols to the ‘Daniya Vasam’. A new shrine was constructed to house these idols and the Mutt was making arrangements to conduct the kumbhabishekam.

However, K Chokkalingam, Sundarasubramanian, Thirukottiyur Madhavan, Hindu Baktha Gana Sabha president Thiagarajan and Srirangam Divya Desiya Parambariya Vaishnava Peravai filed petitions protesting this move and sought a stay from the High Court Bench.

The petitions came up for hearing before Justice K Ravirajapandian on Monday. S Sampathkumar, senior counsel for the petitioners, argued that proper sanction had not been obtained from HR and CE before taking a decision to shift the shine. The due legal process had also not been adhered to, he said.

The Judge adjourned the hearing without specifying a date.
