Prime accused in Sankararaman murder case granted bail

PTICHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Appu, one of the prime accused in the September 2004 murder case of Sankararaman, a temple official, in which Kanchi seers Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi are the main accused.
Granting the bail, Justice M Thanikachalam directed that he be released on furnishing a bond for Rs one lakh and two sureties for like sum.
Appu should stay in Krishnagiri and report to judicial magistrate every day excepting on the days he had to go Pondicherry for attending the hearing of the case, the judge said. He had also been instructed to handover the passport to the magistrate there. He should not contact any of the co-accused in the case, the judge said in his order.
Appu, along with Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi had been charged with planning the murder of Sankararaman in the Varadarajaswamy temple in Kancheepuram.
He had been placed under judicial custody on December 19, 2004, after he had surrendered before a special investigation team set up by the government to probe the murder. He had surrendered at Balakrishnapuram in Andhra Pradesh.
