One more case against Kanchi seer filed in HC
Friday April 22 2005 00:00 ISTCHENNAI: The Divya Desa Paarambariya Paadhukappu Peravai in Srirangam has moved the Madras High Court for a direction to the authorities concerned to register a complaint against Kanchi acharya Jayendra Saraswathi and four others for destroying the Sivan Sannidhi in Azhagiya Nambirayar Temple in Thirukurungudi in Nanguneri taluk in Tirunelveli district and to hold investigation into it.
Justice K P Sivasubramaniam, before whom the writ petition came up for hearing on Thursday, pulled up the Thirukurungudi police for not registering the complaint dated April 6, 2005 from the Peravai. ‘‘Even during British regime, complaints were promptly registered and investigation carried on by the police. What prevented you from doing so?’’ the judge asked Additional Advocate General (AAG) A L Somayaji.
When Somayaji pointed out that a similar petition was pending before the High Court Bench at Madurai, the judge adjourned the matter till April 25 with a direction to the AAG to gather more particulars on the issue.
According to petitioner, the Sivan Sannidhi was in existence in the temple, belonging to the Jeer Mutt, for over 1,000 years. Under the pretext of renovation work, the Srinivasa Charitable Trust, represented by its trustee Venu Srinivasan, demolished the Sivan Sannidhi on the night of June 1, 2004. This was done with the approval of Jeer Mutt represented by Perarurala Ramanuja Jeer. And the Siva Lingam was being accommodated in the fourth pragaram of the temple. This was against the Agama principles of Vaishnava temples. It was also against the rules and regulations of the HR&CE Act.
Acharya Jayendra Saraswathi was one among the five persons who had accorded the approval for the demolition of the Sivan Sannidhi. The others were Venu Srinivasan, Perarulala Ramanuja Jeer, Vanamamalai Mutt Jeer Kaliyan Vanamamalai and josier Unnikrishna Panicker, petitioner said and prayed for a direction to register and conduct investigation into the complaint. The interim prayer was for a direction to the government to submit a report on the issue before the High Court.
