Seer’s name not on list of VIPs exempt from airport security checks
New Delhi:
The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government has taken Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati off the list of VIPs who can walk into any airport in the country without undergoing security checks.
Shankaracharya no longer figures on the list of categories of VIPs exempt from security checks at the airports. The list includes the President of India, the Prime Minister, his Cabinet ministers, SPG (Special Protection Group) protectees, former prime ministers, leader of Opposition, chief ministers of states and Union Territories, deputy chief ministers, governors, chief justice of Supreme Court, chief justices of high courts, Tibetan religious guru Dalai Lama and diplomatic staff of foreign missions in Delhi among others.
Shankaracharya was removed from the list sometime early last year.
Highly-placed sources in Civil Aviation claimed to Mumbai Mirror that the seer was struck off the list after he was arrested in connection with a murder case in November 2004 by the Tamil Nadu police and had to spend time in jail.
