Order to re-instate Shiva Idol in Thirukurungudi temple

Thirunelveli March 15: Nanguneri Court ordered on Tuesday, March 14 that the Shiva lingam which was removed earlier, to be re-installed in the same place, at Thirukurungudi Perumal temple.

Azuligu Azhagiya Nambiraiar temple is located at Thirukurungudi near Nanguneri. It had a shrine for Mahendranathar in one part of the temple. Some people felt that the placement of the idol was against Agama Shastra and hence removed the idol and placed it in another place, on 10th June 2004. This caused consternation to others.

The local police registered a case and conducted investigations regarding this matter. Simultaneously, Chockalingam, the head of Saiva Vellalar Peravai, Kurungudi and Sundara Subramanian another member of the Peravai filed a case at the Nanguneri court against the Jeer Mutt, the district Hindu Religious Endownment Officer and the Collector.

Judge R.Velu of Nanguneri Additional Sessions court ordered that the Siva lingam should be reinstalled in the same place and a the old Shiva sannadhi be re-built. The expenses for this should be borne by those responsible for removing the lingam. He ordered this to be completed within 3 months.
