Furore over cop talking to approver
Tuesday April 12 2005 00:00 ISTKANCHEEPURAM: Sankararaman murder case approver Ravi Subramaniam’s deposition was according to a script prepared by others, defence lawyer K S Dinakaran argued on Monday while starting the cross-examination of Subramaniam at the Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate court.
He was cross-examined by defence lawyers K S Dinakar (for Jayendra Saraswathi), D Lakshmana Reddiar (for Vijayendra Saraswathi) and Varadarajan (for former Mutt manager Sundaresa Iyer).
To begin with, Dinakaran objected to the approver’s statements that Jayendra Saraswati indulged in phone conversations with double meanings with women. He also said the statements that Jayendra Saraswati handed over Sankararaman’s ‘final announcement’ letter to Appu and ordered to finish him off, as also the statement that Jayendra Saraswati on 1/9/2004 told both Appu and him that they should eliminate Sankararaman even if it meant expenditure of Rs 50 lakh, were all lies. Ravi said he had only revealed the truth.
Meanwhile, Inspector Srinivasan whispered something to Ravi Subramaniam, and he suddenly announced that lawyer Dinakaran had met him at his house. When prosecutor demanded the statement be recorded, Magistrate Uthamaraj ordered Inspector Srinivasan to leave the court. The court witnessed a mild furore when Dinakaran objected to the Inspector talking to the approver on the stand which was retaliated by SP K Premkumar. Other lawyers also retaliated.
An annoyed Uthamaraj ordered that complaints should be made only to him failing which he threatened stern action.
In his turn, Lakshmana Reddiar wondered whether Ravi Subramaniam went to Pillayarpatti after the Sankararaman killing to seek his forgiveness. He also charged that Ravi deposed according to his police masters tutoring. After asking him pointed questions on his Pillayarpatti trip, Lakshmana Reddiar finally stated that his deposition and his earlier statement to the police were both outright lies.
Similarly, lawyer Varadarajan demanded to know whether Ravi was aware that if his deposition and earlier statements contradicted each other, he was liable to be charged with murder, besides giving false witness. He also asked questions relating to Ravi’s meeting with the seer and his business dealings with Sundaresa Iyer. He stated that Ravi’s statements with regard to Sundaresa Iyer were all false. Ravi refuted this.
Earlier, when defence lawyers filed exemption petitions for both Jayendra Saraswati and Vijayendra Saraswati, the prosecution demanded that as both had not turned up thrice earlier, arrest warrants should be executed against them if they failed to turn up the next time. Lawyer Dinakar said both of them were unable to come due to the various festivals being celebrated at the Mutt. Magistrate Uthamaraj ordered that both should be present for the next hearing date on April 13.
