Sunday March 12 2006 00:00 IST
KANCHEEPURAM: Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I G Uthamaraj has instructed the police to take appropriate action on a petition seeking registration of a case against AIADMK partymen who had put up a hoarding showing Kanchi Seer Jayendrar with his hands chained. The petitioner, V Mahadevan, belonging to Pallavaram stated that the banner showed Jayendrar in a denigrating manner and wounded the religious sentiments of Hindus and the devotees of the seer in large numbers.
Listing State Handloom Minister V Somasundaram, MLA Mythili Thirunavukkarasu, councillors Sambandam, Uma Maheswari and her husband ‘Bullet’ Parimalam as the people behind such a hoarding, the petitioner said that the hoarding was erected to intentionally wound the feelings of Hindus and denigrate the image of the Seers in the eyes of other religious followers, at the time of elections.
The petitioner said that the trial against the Kanchi Seer was pending in court and no one could be subjected to punishment till conviction. He charged that the act was an interference with the process of trial, fair course of justice, by creating a psychological impression that the seers were not innocent. If this type of public condemnation was allowed, there was no necessity for trial by courts of law, he stated.
Further, he said that the acts of the accused were also an offence under the Representation of People’s Act as the Election Commission had notified the date for Assembly elections in the State.
Mahadevan alleged that the police inspector of Siva Kanchi police station had failed to register a complaint in this regard and prayed that a case should be registered against the AIADMK people and investigation should be conducted according to the law.
The hoarding put up on February 18 in front of the taluk office by an AIADMK Councillor of Kancheepuram municipality and her husband Bullet Parimalam, displayed the achievements of the AIADMK Government. One of the pictures depicted Jayendrar with his hands chained and praised Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for treating everyone as equal before the law. However, the picture was removed within a day following directions from the AIADMK leadership.
