Ravi to appear in court on March 24
Friday March 11 2005 00:00 IST

KANCHEEPURAM: Approver Ravi Subramaniam could be examined before the committal of the case to the Chengalpattu Sessions Court and the prosecution’s petition seeking the same would be taken up once the copies of the chargesheet were ready, Kancheepuram Judicial Magistrate-I G Uthamaraj informed the prosecution here on Thursday.

He said this while ordering the four accused, including Kanchi Sankaracharya Vijayendra Saraswathi, to present themselves before the court on March 24.

Earlier, senior seer Jayendra Saraswathi, through his counsel, had filed a petition under Section 317 of the CrPC seeking to dispense with his personal appearance by stating that he had to perform the aradhana pooja of the 67th pontiff Mahadevendra Saraswathi at Kalavai.

The other accused’s remands were extended by Magistrate Uthamaraj through video conferencing from Chengalpattu. Stating that preparation of the chargesheet was taking time, the magistrate informed the prosecution that as the court did not possess a photocopying machine, they were finding it difficult to prepare as many as 30 copies of the 1,873 page document.

Magistrate Uthamaraj further said the process was under way and he would give an explanation to the higher judicial officers for delay in committing the case to the Sessions Court.

He said this while Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) S P Thyagarajan was seeking a date from the magistrate for the examination of approver Ravi Subramaniam. The APP also prayed for an early committal of the case, reminding the magistrate that already seven weeks had passed since the filing of the chargesheet.

Later, advocate Darwin Wisdom submitted a petition, praying that the remand be extended in open court and not through video conferencing.

In the evening, approver Ravi Subramaniam, now lodged in Kanchi sub jail, was produced before the court and the magistrate ordered him to appear before the court on March 24.
