Madurai: The High Court annexe at Madurai has ordered S.P.Premkumar to be imprisoned for one month in the case of the ill-treatment of an Army veteran. The police are making preparations to arrest Premkumar on receipt of the court order.
Nallakaman(aged 74) had rented a house from Bhairav Singh at Vadipatti, located near Madurai. The latter had filed a complaint against Nallakaman in a rental dispute. Premkumar, who then held the post of sub-inspector at the police station, arrested Nallakaman and his son and physically attacked them. He tied their bodies with a chain and dragged them on the streets to disgrace them. Moreover, he filed false cases against Nallakaman and his son.
On receiving complaints from the general public, the Assisstant Collector of Usilampatti ordered an investigation and a case was filed against Premkumar as well as other officers including Subramanian, Chellaiah and Radhakrishnan. Appeals were filed by Premkumar as well as Nallakaman.
Judge Selvam heard the appeals yesterday and said in his judgement that Premkumar, Radhakrishnan, Subramnian and Chelliah have crossed their boundaries. Premkumar and the three officers did not conduct themselves in a manner befitting public officials who should be role models for the public. They had tied Nallakaman in chains and dragged him from the police station to the bus station. Considering the seriousness of the acts they committed, the lower court handling the case should give them appropriate punishment of one month imprisonment each.
Nallakaman commenting on the judgement said that he is dissatisfied that punishment is given to only four of the twelve against whom he had filed complaints against. He is planning to appeal against the judgment in the High court.
