Lawyers granted anticipatory bail
Tuesday March 8 2005 00:00 IST
KANCHEEPURAM: Lawyers A Shanmugam, Y Thiagarajan and Revathy Vasudevan were on Monday granted anticipatory bail by the Chengalpattu Sessions Court in a case filed against them by the Siva Kanchi police for allegedly threatening Ravi Subramaniam, an accused who turned approver in the Sankararaman murder case, at the Kancheepuram sub jail.Allowing the petition, Judge G M Akbar Ali, in his order, said, there were sufficient grounds for granting anticipatory bail, adding that the lawyers should comply with the conditions laid down in Sec. 438 (ii) of the Criminal Procedure Code, which states that the petitioners should present themselves for interrogation as and when required by the respondent (Siva Kanchi police in this case) and should not either induce or threaten those acquainted with the facts of the case.
In advocate Revathy Vasudevan’s case, Ali directed her to present herself before the Siva Kanchi police on Saturdays for a month. The advocates were also ordered to furnish a personal bond for a sum decided by the court.
Earlier, arguing for the advocates, counsel D Lakshamana Reddiar and Abdul Hakim argued that considering the fact that the petitioners were senior advocates. it was very unlikely that they would have committed the alleged offence of threatening and luring Ravi Subramaniam inside the guarded sub jail.
The timing of the complaint lodged by Chitra Ravi Subramaniam raised many questions. Countering their claims, Public Prosecutor K Arumugam stated that Jayendra Saraswathi had been granted anticipatory bail in the case by the Madras HC.
RESUME DUTY: The Kancheepuram lawyers affiliated to the Bar Association on Monday resumed duty after deciding to end the fortnight-long boycott.
