Furnish us with all the documents submitted by the Police: Kanchi Acharya’s Defense Counsel:[Excerpts from: http://www.dinamani.com and http://www.dailythanthi.com ]
Kanchipuram, April 6th: The defense counsel of Kanchi Acharya has requested the Court to provide them with the list of all the supporting documents submitted by the police along with the charge sheet.
On March 31st, the Kanchi Acharyas and others were furnished a copy of the charge sheet. On that day, the Judge had ordered that Ravi Subramaniam’s examination be conducted yesterday [April 5th]. The Kanchi Acharyas Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal had obtained leave of absence by citing their inability to attend the court by petitioning through their lawyers.
During the arguments in Court later in the day, the Acharya’s defense counsel requested the court to provide the defense with a list of all the supporting documents submitted by the police. He argued that the defense is entitled to this information without which the defense might be seriously handicapped.
However, the Prosecutor argued that the defense is not entitled to the documents. Reacting to this, the defense counsel said that the defense may be surprised by sudden addition or deletion to the supporting documents later during the trial. He accused the police of conducting this trial by deliberately keeping the defense in the dark about the supporting documents.
The Prosecutor argued that many of the supporting documents cannot be copied by Xerox and that is the reason for not providing the defense with the copies. The defense counsel ridiculed this claim and contended that providing copies of CDs is not difficult when even media people were provided with CDs.
After hearing the arguments from both sides, Judge Uttamaraj adjourned the decision to 7th April.
