To
The Editor,
The Outlook.Another small note (June 20, issue) of your Chennai correspondent Mr. S. Anand smacks with the low level of information wrapped in pure lies, unsuspectingly camouflaged to the common readers of “The Outlook”. It is very surprising that a magazine of national stature would continuously publish slander and cheap literature by a person who himself perhaps had never visited Kanchi till recently. The bright part of the entire episode is that all persons (repeatedly called accused) have been released on bail. The entire Tamilnadu Government including the Chief Minister and police officials have been screaming through all paid weeklies and yellow magazines that they had clinching evidence against The Kanchi Sankaracharyas and other officials of the mutt. Yet the Hon. Supreme Court and Chennai High Court have refuted all the submissions made till date. A careful reading of the court orders shows that how desperate the police have been to lay the blame of murder of Sankaraman on the Kanchi Sankaracharyas. The huge gap in the media submissions and actual documentation in the court can be understood while reading the various orders of the court. Again these are actual orders and not relying on according to some sources ( which your correspondent regularly relies) which have believed the same and narrated.
I quite feel that senior people in ‘The Outlook’ are unwittingly party to the calculated and slander campaign run by Mr. S. Anand. I do not wish to comment on the various articles from Nov,04 to Jan, 05 as it was at par with all media and news channels and such TRP’s are always welcome in your industry. But even after the hard hitting Supreme Court order of Jan 10, 05 granting bail to Jayendra Saraswati , your magazine should have shown restraint in further articles.
In your June 20 issue:1. Your title “Where the Saints go Skulking In” . The meaning of ‘Skulk” is to lurk, conceal oneself, avoid observation , especially with sinister motive or in cowardice. I do not know how even such a statement can be attributed . Maybe the Editor – In – Chief will know.
2. “ In fact , Jayendra and Vijayendra ( accused 1 and 2 ) have not been seeing eye-to-eye.” This is whole untruth. It is to be noted that Vijayendra Saraswati has been chosen to be successor to Jayendra Saraswati and that they are not blood relations even distantly. This shows the democratic and transparency of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
3. “ When the two Saraswatis arrived in Kanchipuram, there was hardly anyone to welcome them – “ The Sankaracharyas have never been muster truckloads of people to come and attend any jamboree as politicians do. This has never been the case till date , so there is no need to start of today. Yet at 5.45 in the early morning hours there were around 150 devotees such that the cavalcade to the mutt was about 30 cars and 70 motorcycles. This is definitely not a handful as written by you.
4. “ There is a strong speculation that Jayendra was keen on appointing a new Sankaracharya with a clean image – Gnanaprasendra Saraswati”. Your correspondent has been careful to use the word “ speculation” to absolve himself of any liability towards the statement , but it would be better to a journal which publishes authentic facts than which resorts to yellow journalism to increase sales.I hope you will analyze facts before publishing. Anyway both the Sankaracharyas of Kanchi have been above this and devotees (true) know and do not require any character certificate from Mr. S. Anand for this.
Yours truly,
Ramesh Ramu ,
